Current Release
All Little Trouble wines are crafted with minimal intervention. We work with organic and sustainable vineyards, farmed by proud land stewards.
All wines are unfined and unfiltered, utilizing only native yeasts and never blocking secondary fermentation. Wines are fermented and aged in entirely neutral vessels to preserve the flavor profiles inherent to each vineyard site.
2022 Grist Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc
We always agreed that we’d only be temped to produce the variety if we could get our hands on Grist’s grapes, and finally Woody Hambrecht relented. We can be quite exhausting when we put our minds to it. Because this SB is 100% musqué clone, the aromatics are turned up to 11. While the bright, citrusy meyer lemon and key lime components can be expected from a tart variety on a tart site, it’s the hint of herbal chartreuse that really helps us pat ourselves on the back. Some extra time in neutral barrel also aided in building a velvety soft mouthfeel despite quite a bit of pucker. 2022 in particular was expressive in ground cherries and pineapple sage. Yum!
Grapes were foot tread and then direct pressed whole cluster upon arrival at winery. Fruit fermented in stainless steel until dryness, then was racked into a combination of stainless steel drums and neutral barrels. Native primary and secondary ferments, unfined/unfiltered. Because of a shared winery facility and the nature of low-intervention winemaking, we had some minor fermentation gurgles in 2022 that warranted a tiny bit more so2 being added to this bad boy. Still minimal, but transparency is key!
2022 Stampede Vineyard Heritage Red Blend
The vineyard that started it all! As always, Stampede continues to be a pillar upon which our sanity lies each harvest. Jeff Perlegos, owner and farmer, being at the helm of this historic site means that our sole job with this fruit is simply not to get in it’s way. With flavors that embody Lodi’s combination of wild west saloon culture and produce-growing paradise, this Zin based blend (that includes Mission, Alicante, Syrah, Grenache and Tokay) rides the fine line of serious and chuggable. California rodeo dust is our favorite flavor descriptor of this site, with heaps of wild brush herbs and watermelon candy to boot. 2022 Stampede is particularly plummy with heaps of dried thyme.
Grapes were 2/3 destemmed aupon arrival at winery, and 1/3 was left whole cluster. Fruit fermented on skins (and some stems, obv) in neutral vessel until dryness, then pressed into neutral barrels. Native primary and secondary ferments, unfined/unfiltered, and minimal So2 before bottling was the only addition.
2021 Grist Vineyard Syrah
This is special!!! We love this wine. That much is known. But year after year it’s at the 12 month mark after release that we feel it really starts to shine. Because of that, we decided to hold some of last year’s Syrah release back in order to begin over-vintaging in order to bring a more mature wine to you at the time of release. It tastes SO. GOOD.
While there’s no such thing as a bad block at the site, we like to think we get the best of the best when it comes to this Syrah at Grist Vineyard. Our “section” of this vineyard is the far west terraced block that tends to ripen the slowest. From here we get the best views of the wild Sonoma west coast forests full of deer, boar, coyote and bobcats. Grist is always generous when it comes to both acid and juicy fruit-driven qualities in its’ wines, but where we really get heart-eyed emojis for this wine is in it’s savory components. This year the spicy and savory black tea and tobacco components really shone especially when paired up with curranty, berry goodness.
Grapes were 50% destemmed upon arrival at winery. Fruit fermented on skins in neutral vessel until dryness, then pressed into neutral barrels. Native primary and secondary ferments, unfined/unfiltered, and minimal So2 before bottling was the only addition.
2022 Champi Vineyard Chardonnay
A dear friend once said "I don't have a favorite variety, but it's Chardonnay". While we don't love to speak in superlatives we wouldn't NOT agree. After the wild success of our Chardonnay from Rorick Heritage Vineyard, we set our sites on finding a vineyard that would be a part of the core Little Trouble family tree for years and years to come. That special place was found in Champi Vineyard, nestled in a little pocket of Redwood Valley in Mendocino. Farmed by Mitch Champi and Mitch alone, this well-kept secret spot is perfect for the bright, generous style of Chardonnay we love to drink. If you’ve never heard of Redwood Valley, google “redvine soil” to learn why it’s so special. It’s an orchard full of crunchy summer pears and just a hint of sweet spring flowers.
Grapes were foot-trodden upon arrival at the winery and left on skins for 24 hours before being pressed. Juice fermented in neutral vessel until dryness, then pressed into neutral barrels. Native primary and secondary ferments, unfined/unfiltered, and minimal So2 before bottling was the only addition.
2022 Technicolor
The people have spoken; the beloved Technicolor is back! Taking inspiration from the original iteration of blending our white/orange/rosé lots together, we've followed suit in 2022. Due to devastating frosts at Alder Spring Vineyard we looked to our other vineyards to create the 2022 - a blend of 9 different varieties in all. As refreshing, complex and unique as ever - the Technicolor honors its Dole fruit cup sprinkled with Maldon salt heritage perfectly.
Since this super special wine is a super special blend of a few different wines we made in 2022, it would be pretty tough to tell you exactly all of the technical information that went into it. All wines followed our general protocol of Native primary and secondary ferments, unfined/unfiltered, and minimal So2 before bottling was the only addition.
2021 Tiny Horse Pinot Noir
When we had the opportunity to work with some of our favorite Pinot berries in California we simply HAD to say yes, although both Jen and I were hesitant as there are already plenty of brilliant producers out there making mind-blowing Pinot Noir rivaling some of our favorite Burgundy domains. In the hullaballoo of harvest craziness we decided to keep it simple, and keep it different from the rest. We went light!
Our Pinot is only macerated for three days, giving it a glou-glou, porch pounder style. Heaps of juicy summer berries, raspberry cordial and rose water leap down your throat because this little wine desperately wants to be drunk.
Grapes were foot-trodden upon arrival at the winery and fermented on skins in neutral vessel for three days, then pressed. Finished fermenting and aged in neutral barrels. Native primary and secondary ferments, unfined/unfiltered, and minimal So2 before bottling was the only addition.
2022 Grist Vineyard Carbonic Zinfandel
The Grist Carbonic Zinfandel is our quintessential summer gluggable red. You can’t say Grist without saying complexity, so it certainly isn’t lacking in that department, but there is an overwhelming feeling to wipe fresh sour cherry juice from your chin as you drink it. Plums and black raspberry also come to mind - sprinkled with a pinch or three of Diaspora’s Aranya pepper. It’s everything red and purple and popsicle and summertime.
Grapes were gently and lovingly loaded into an airtight stainless steel vessel (whole cluster, of course) upon arrival at the winery. Fruit was fermented fully carbonic with a daily dose of CO2 for 8 days, then foot trodden and allowed to rip through remaining primary fermentation on skins for 36 hours. Zin was then pressed into neutral wood barrels where, after a rack and return, it hung out until bottling. Native primary and secondary ferments, unfined/unfiltered, and minimal So2 before bottling was the only addition.
“As with many younger people entering the wine business, Jennifer Reichardt and Sara Morgenstern, the principals of Little Trouble, have day jobs to earn their keep. For Little Trouble, they seek grapes from more affordable areas outside the high status regions. Calaveras County is on few people’s wine itinerary, but Rorick is a superb vineyard, and this chardonnay is lovely, light-bodied, refreshing and deliciously saline.”
